Car or Automotive photography is a specialised form of photography that involves capturing images of cars and other vehicles to highlight their features, design, and performance. There are a few key tips and tricks to keep in mind when taking automotive photos.

The right location: The photo shoot location is critical to getting the best results. Generally speaking, the area should provide a clean, unobstructed background and plenty of natural light unless it’s a night photo shoot. Industrial areas, empty parking lots, or even open roads can all make for great locations, as long as there’s enough space to maneuver the camera and the vehicle being photographed.

The right angle: The angle at which photos were taken can greatly impact the final result. I used to experiment with different angles, including high and low shots, to see which works best for the vehicle. A common technique is to shoot from a low angle, which can make the vehicle appear more imposing and powerful.

Attention to lighting: Good lighting is key to any successful photo shoot, especially in automotive photography. It could be natural light, such as the sun or streetlights, and positioning the vehicle to highlight its curves and details. Or, we can also use reflectors or artificial lighting to fill in shadows and highlight specific areas of the vehicle.

Post-processing: Nowadays, all images are processed. With the latest camera and software technologies, post-processing can greatly enhance automotive photos by allowing you to adjust exposure, colour balance, and contrast. There are many different techniques and settings to find what works best for your photos.

In conclusion, automotive photography is a challenging and rewarding discipline that requires a keen eye for composition, attention to detail, and a good understanding of light and camera settings. By keeping these tips in mind and experimenting with different techniques, we can produce beautiful, impactful photos that capture the essence of the vehicles I photograph.
